2017 Five To Watch: Linebackers

2017 Five To Watch: Linebackers

For the seventh straight season, NPF Sports looks at District 2

players to keep an eye on going into the 2017 season. Next up, linebackers.

Zach Davies, Sr. – Wyoming Valley West
Seems like Valley West always finds a tough linebacker to place in the middle of the Spartans’ defense and Davies was the guy last year. Good news for Coach Pat Keating, he is back for 2017. Davies is another inside player who has a nose for the ball and is an excellent tackler. The Spartans defense has a chance to be really good and Davies will be the leader on that side of the ball.

J.C. Gaughan, Sr. – North Pocono
Gaughan went overlooked last season just because of his two teammates at the same position. Both have graduated so he will now be the leader on the defensive side of the ball. Gaughan has all the skills that make him valuable against the run or the pass. He is getting some looks from Patriot League schools.

Brendan Mozeleski, Sr. – Old Forge
Mozeleski has been a key part of the Old Forge defense for the past several season. An ardent run stopper, he was making defensive plays all over the field. He also has shown some athleticism as he runs the ball on offense and is an above-average baseball player.

Adrian Otero, Sr. – Hazleton Area
Two years ago, Coach Mike Brennan raved about Otero when he was a sophomore that he had a future at linebacker. College scouts agree as he is getting looks from multiple schools going into his senior season. Otero’s quickness is what makes him stand out although he does play physical, too.

Sam Pittsman, Sr. – Valley View
Pittsman was the heart and soul of a defense that held District 2 champions Scranton Prep and North Pocono to 14 and 7 points respectively in their regular season matchups. He had 105 tackles and is the kind of player who was always around the ball. He is also the starting fullback.

Corey Mruk, So. – Wyoming Area
Mruk moved into a starting position when one of the starters was injured and was strong for the last eight games. Now, he has a chance to be the leader of the Wyoming Area defense. He could end up being one of the better linebackers in the WVC.

Anthony Blake, Sr. – G.A.R.
Beau Getz, Sr. – Northwest
Joey Lynn, Sr. - Berwick
Reese Patronick, Jr. – Meyers
Jeffrey Schmude, Sr. – Crestwood
